Sometimes I wonder how I don’t know so many awesome artists exist already until someone points them out to me. That’s exactly how I felt the other day when Charlotte told me about an exhibit she saw at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The artist’s name is Rachel Perry Welty and she is actually pretty local to our area having attended Connecticut College and the School at the MFA.

The above is from her, Lost in My Life series, and she made the original setting out of tons and tons of stickers off of pieces of fruit! I imagine that’s the artist herself amongst all of the stickers though I have no confirmation of that.

This one from the same series is made of bread tags. The column she’s trapped in reminds me of people getting stuck in stacks of tires – trapped and unable to escape!

Can you guess what this one’s made of? Price tags. It has a great repeat that could easily be made into a fabric pattern too.

Rachel was born in Tokyo, Japan and another thing I really like about her work is that it’s so varied. The above is a piece made by puncturing a black sheet of paper to make what she calls an Unknown Constellation. What’s especially cool is that her work is represented in Boston by the Barbara Krakow Gallery on Newbury Street. We just moved in around the corner on Commonwealth so hopefully we’ll be able to stop in soon!

Not all of her work is 2D either, the above is also made of bread tags – 208,896 loaves worth in fact. As someone who has undertaken the project of the century with the yurt it’s awesome to see someone else who has taken on projects that require some repetitive, large scale commitments.
